Ukraine strikes infrastructure at Russia’s Oreshnik launch site, military says
Ukraine’s General Staff said on Thursday that its forces conducted a series of “successful” strikes in January against the Kapustin Yar test range, a launch site for ballistic missiles located in Russia’s southern Astrakhan region.
In a statement on Telegram, the Ukrainian General Staff said the strikes hit a complex of hangar-type buildings used for pre-launch preparation of intercontinental and intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs). The operation reportedly used Ukraine’s long-range capabilities, including the domestically produced Flamingo cruise missile.
The strikes inflicted “varying degrees” of damage on several buildings, the Ukrainian military claimed, adding that one hangar was “significantly” damaged and some personnel were evacuated from the site. Russian officials have yet to comment on the reported attacks.
Ukraine’s military has previously identified Kapustin Yar as the launch point for Russia’s Oreshnik missile strikes, including the January 9 attack on Lviv. However, Thursday’s report did not mention the Oreshnik specifically by name.
In October 2025, Ukraine’s Security Service claimed it had destroyed an Oreshenik in a strike on the Kapustin Yar facility. Russia first deployed the Oreshnik — hypersonic-capable IRBM — against the city of Dnipro in November 2024.
