Russia’s ‘Channel One’ announces plans to cast a female lead in film shot in outer space
The Russian state-owned television channel Pervy Kanal (Channel One) has announced plans to cast a woman in the leading role of a new film that’s going to be shot in outer space.
The drama is tentatively titled “Vyzov” (“Challenge”) and the casting date is set to be announced soon. According to Channel One, initially, the filmmakers had two different versions of the script and were planning to carry out castings among both men and women for the lead role. Since then, the filmmakers have settled on having a woman play the main character.
“The film’s producers made the decision in the interests of the plot,” Channel One’s website says. “A female role is definitely more advantageous for the picture.”
Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos announced plans to shoot a film in space in September 2020. The film was announced as a joint project between the state space corporation, Channel One, and the film studio Yellow, Black, and White. The film’s director will be Klim Shipenko (known for the 2019 comedy “Serf”) and its producers will be Roscosmos director Dmitry Rogizin and Channel One’s director-general Konstantin Ernst.
