Alexey Navalny’s condition has stabilized, says Anatoly Kalinichenko, the deputy chief doctor at the emergency care hospital in Omsk where the opposition politician has been hospitalized.
“I’ll allow myself to say cautiously, given the state he was in when he was brought to us and the ambiguity of a complete diagnosis, that we’ve managed to stabilize him and we’ve now got a clinical picture that for us is a certain cautious, careful, good prognostic sign,” Kalinichenko told reporters.
The hospital official declined to say if Navalny is still in a coma. According to the Omsk Health Department, “Navalny is in a non-induced coma and remains connected to a ventilator.” At the same time, Ekho Moskvy editor-in-chief Alexey Venediktov says his source claim Navalny is again breathing on his own.
Navalny’s wife, Yulia, has already arrived at the hospital in Omsk, along with Anti-Corruption Foundation director Ivan Zhdanov and “Physicians Alliance” leader Anastasia Vasilieva (who serves as Navalny’s regular physician). Hospital officials refused to let them see Navalny, reportedly insisting that the “patient has not consented to any visits.” Officials told even Yulia Navalnaya that she couldn’t see her husband without presenting their marriage certificate.
On August 20, Alexey Navalny fell violently ill aboard a plane from Tomsk to Moscow. After passing out, the aircraft made an emergency landing in Omsk, where paramedics rushed Navalny to a local intensive care unit. Anatoly Kalinichenko, the hospital’s deputy chief physician, later told reporters that his doctors are fighting to save Navalny’s life.
