Russian National Guard dispatched to downtown Moscow following Navalny verdict

Detachments of the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya) were dispatched to central Moscow following a district court’s decision to <a href="https://meduza.io/en/news/2021/02/02/russian-opposition-politician-alexey-navalny-will-spend-the-next-2-5-years-in-prison-following-a-verdict-in-moscow" target="_blank">sentence</a> opposition figure Alexey Navalny to two years and eight months in prison on Tuesday, February 2. Police officials cordoned off both Pushkin Square and Manezhnaya Square (a pedestrian area connecting to Red Square, where Navalny’s supporters <a href="https://meduza.io/en/news/2021/02/02/navalny-s-supporters-call-for-protests-near-red-square-following-verdict-in-moscow" target="_blank">called</a> for protests). Several central subway stations were also shut down. Only a handful of arrests have been reported near Red Square so far.
