Mediazona and BBC News Russian, together with a team of volunteers, have identified the names of 90,019 Russian soldiers killed during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine as of January 24, using open sources. Over the past two weeks, starting on January 10, they documented 1,964 names.

According to BBC News Russian, 23 percent of all confirmed deaths were individuals who signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry after the war began. Seventeen percent were convicts recruited from prisons, and 12 percent were mobilized soldiers.

Another 17 percent of the identified dead were career military personnel. The journalists' list includes nine generals and 500 officers ranked lieutenant colonel or higher.

BBC News Russian notes that actual losses are significantly higher, estimating that their analysis accounts for only 45 to 65 percent of the real death toll.

“Based on this estimate, the actual number of Russian fatalities could range from 138,500 to 200,000,” the journalists stated.
