The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported Thursday that a cargo ship flying the flag of Panama hit a Russian naval mine in the Black Sea.
According to Ukraine’s military, the ship was headed to a Danube port to collect a grain shipment when it hit the mine, which set the upper deck on fire and caused the vessel to lose control. The captain ultimately grounded the ship to prevent it from sinking.
Ukrainian search and rescue ships immediately came to the crew’s aid, the military said. Two people were reportedly injured, and one of them was hospitalized.
