Russian mapping and business database company 2GIS asks employees to compile registry of LGBT establishments
The management of the Russian online mapping serving 2GIS has instructed employees to gather data about establishments for LGBTQ+ people in a single registry, the outlet iStories reported on Monday, publishing a photo of the message workers received.
The letter asks employees to review the businesses included on the company’s maps in light of the Russian Supreme Court’s recent ruling to ban the “LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization.”
“Our product might have these kinds of establishments (and they might not be obvious). […] It’s not possible for us to catch all of these places in a centralized way, so it’s important that we conduct local reviews. They’re generally categorized as ’nightclubs’ or ‘bars,’” the directive reads.
Meduza contacted 2GIS for comment but has not received a response as of this article’s publication.
