‘Are you even human beings?’ Yulia Navalnaya rebukes prison leadership for not treating her husband on week two of his fever
Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, wrote on Instagram that her husband, who was moved to a “punishment cell” by prison authorities on December 31 and remains there to this day, has had a fever for at least a week. She said that Alexey first told her he was sick on January 2.
“So for over a week, they haven’t allowed him to lie down during the day, despite his fever. They’re not treating him, and they’re intentionally making his detention conditions worse,” wrote Navalnaya.
On Monday, January 9, Navalnaya said, Navalny’s lawyer was told during a prison visit that he could give his client medicine, but when he returned from a run to the pharmacy, prison workers wouldn’t take anything from him.
This time, I’m not going to address Putin like I usually do. He sits in his bunker and makes everyone wait two weeks before meeting with him. His priorities are clear. [Instead,] I’ll address the administration and the medical staff at IK-6, [the penal colony where Navalny is being held]. Are you even human beings? After all, you have parents and children back at home. What’s going on in your head? How do you live with yourselves, knowing that you intentionally made someone sick, you’re not treating him, and you’re not giving him medicine?
“Alexey will get better sooner or later, of course, while you’re going to have to live your entire lives knowing that your job consists of torturing people,” wrote Navalnaya, calling on the prison’s leadership to leave her husband alone for a few days and to give him at least some basic medicine.
