Head of Ukraine’s largest energy company urges residents to leave the country to reduce the load on its energy system

Ukrainians who can afford to do so should prepare to the leave the country ahead of winter, in order to reduce strain on the country’s energy system – that’s the opinion of Maksym Timchenko, head of DTEK, the largest private energy company in Ukraine.

“It’s not an emergency situation where people need to evacuate immediately, but we need to organize everything so that consumption is as efficient as possible. If you consume less, then hospitals treating wounded soldiers will be guaranteed electricity,” he said.

Russia has been launching massive strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since early October. The last such attack occurred on November 15.

On November 18, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that Russian attacks took nearly half of Ukraine’s energy system offline.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has already suggested that Ukrainians who fled the country because of the war should not return home in winter. However, Ukrainian authorities are not specifically calling on anyone to leave the country.
