Putin proposes revoking citizenship for 'discrediting' or 'disinformation' about Russian army

Vladimir Putin has submitted proposed amendments to a law on Russian citizenship to the Russian State Duma, Russian state media reported on Monday. The new legislation would expand the list of reasons for which a person with acquired (rather than birthright) Russian citizenship can lose that citizenship.

Under the amended law, a person could lose Russian citizenship for:

  • carrying out the activities of an “undesirable organization”;
  • spreading “disinformation” about the Russian army;
  • “discrediting” the Russian army;
  • publicly calling for the violation of Russia’s territorial integrity

The original bill, which was adopted in April, established a simplified procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for certain categories of people as well as establishing for which a person’s citizenship could be revoked, including crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking.
