Russia shells homes and infrastructure in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia

Russian forces carried out multiple airstrikes in Kharkiv Friday morning, according to the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov.

“Strikes on one of Kharkiv’s businesses. According to tentative reports, they hit an administrative industrial building on the premises,” he wrote on Telegram.

Oleh Synyehubov, head of the Kharkiv region, said the target of the attack was an industrial infrastructure facility in the city’s Kyivskyi district. He reported that six people were injured.

Russian troops also launched missile strikes in Zaporizhzhia Friday morning, according to Regional Governor Oleksandr Starukh. Zaporizhzhia Acting Mayor Anatoly Kurtev reported that the attack damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, including a school. Three people were injured, Starukh said.

On October 10, the Russian Ministry of Defense began carrying out massive missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. The ministry announced it was attacking military, energy, and telecommunications targets, but it also shelled civilian targets. The Kremlin made it clear that the strikes were retribution for the explosion on the Crimean Bridge, for which Moscow blames Ukrainian intelligence services.

Happy birthday, Mr. President

The day before the Crimean Bridge explosion was Vladimir Putin's 70th birthday; Ukrainian officials have hinted that the blast was a "birthday present" for the Russian president. Meanwhile, Meduza marked the occasion by speaking to sources close to the Russian government about how things are going for the president. Their accounts painted a picture of a Kremlin in serious crisis.
