Russian Federation Council Speaker calls for Ukraine to enter negotiations ‘today’ at G20 summit
At the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit summit in Indonesia on Thursday, Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko proposed to Ukraine’s delegation that the two countries begin peace negotiations “today.”
“Let’s sit down at the negotiating table today, at the G20 venue. The Russian parliament and the Ukrainian parliament. Let’s try to understand each other, find an agreement,” Matvienko can be heard saying in a video posted on the Federation Council’s official Telegram channel.
According to TASS, Matvienko was responding to a statement by a Ukrainian delegate who accused Russia of aggression in Ukraine. The speaker called the accusation “unsubstantiated” and “unfounded.”
Speaking to journalists after the session, Matvienko said that the negotiations she was proposing could not be about Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s occupied territories. “We’re willing to put an end to further military action in Ukraine, but on the terms offered by Russia,” she added.
