Russian authorities have opened a new criminal case against jailed opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza, RT reported on Thursday, citing an unnamed source. The politician reportedly stands accused of treason.
The accusation is reportedly linked to three speeches the politician made, at public events in Lisbon, Helsinki, and Washington, which were critical of Russian authorities, reports TASS. Kara-Murza’s lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov, said “the speeches bore no threat to the country, it was public, open criticism.”
Prosecutors allege that over a period of multiple years, Kara-Murza worked for organizations based in NATO member states, helping them with activities that were “directed against Russia’s security” in exchange for $30,000 a month, according to RT.
In April, Vladimir Kara-Murza was sent to remand prison as part of a criminal case against him for spreading “disinformation” about the Russian army.
In July, Kara-Murza’s lawyer reported that prosecutors had opened a new criminal case against him for his involvement with an “undesirable” organization.
