Suicide bombing near Russian Embassy in Kabul

Update: The Russian Foreign Ministry reports that two employees of the Russian embassy were killed in the explosion in Kabul. A total of at least 10 people died and 8 more were hospitalized, a source told RIA Novosti.

On the morning of September 5, 2022, an explosion occurred near the gates of the Russian Embassy in Kabul. According to media reports, the explosion was carried out by a suicide bomber. At that time, a line had been gathering outside the building to apply for visas.

Afghan police reported that the bomber was identified and shot by armed embassy guards as he was approaching the gates. They also reported that two people were killed and eleven injured in the incident.

A RIA Novosti source claims that a Russian diplomat had come outside at the time of the blast to announce visa applicants' names.

Local media say at least two Russian diplomats were killed, but a RIA Novosti source says two Russians were injured: a diplomat and a security guard.
