A “referendum” on whether to join Russia will be held in the occupied parts of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region in September, according to Alexander Saulenko, the Russian-appointed mayor of Berdyansk.
“We’re preparing for the referendum. It’s scheduled for September. I can’t give an exact date yet,” Saulenko told TASS.
In mid-August, sources close to the Kremlin told Meduza that the Russian authorities were considering postponing their planned “referendums” until the winter in light of their slow progress in the war.
