President Volodymyr Zelensky says he has instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to study the possibility of marriage equality in Ukraine. Responding to a petition on the Ukrainian president’s website that has accrued more than 28,000 signatures (the threshold for presidential review is 25,000), Zelensky explained that Ukraine’s Constitution defines marriage as a union between a man and woman, and the Constitution can’t be amended during wartime, but the government is developing options for legalizing “registered civil partnerships.”
The petition stresses the need for people in same-sex relationships “to have the opportunity to start families and having a supporting official document.”
