Political activist Evgeny Kochegin, the former head of Alexey Navalny’s headquarters in Volgograd, is facing a criminal case for evading alternative civil service.

The case against Kochegin was reported by Vash Dozor, a political organization he founded in Volgograd. According to the organization, Kochegin maintains that the case against him is politically motivated and connects it with his work to counter electoral fraud during September’s State Duma vote.

“The military commissariat isn’t complying with the legal procedure for deployment. They falsify documents and ignore the medical certificate, which envisages [my] exemption [from alternative civil service]. We have an ongoing lawsuit,” Kochegin said, as quoted by Vash Dozor.

On November 10, the former head of Navalny’s Ufa headquarters, Liliya Chanysheva, was jailed pending trial on criminal charges of creating an “extremist group.” Chanysheva is the first suspect arrested as part of this felony case, which authorities opened against Alexey Navalny and his close associates earlier this year.
