Russian officials report more than 60,000 deaths from COVID-19

On the morning of Thursday, January 7, Russian officials reported that 60,457 people in Russia have died from the coronavirus since the start of the epidemic. In the past day, 506 people reportedly died from the disease.

Also in the last 24 hours, Russia recorded 23,541 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number of active cases in the country to 562,233.

In total, Russia has recorded 3,332,142 coronavirus cases since March 2020; 2,709,452 coronavirus patients are known to have recovered from the disease.

Russia’s federal headquarters for combating the coronavirus has presented different coronavirus mortality figures that the Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat). In December 2020, Rosstat reported that there were 78,600 deaths in Russia linked to the coronavirus between April and October of last year.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova attributed the discrepancy in the data from the federal headquarters and Rosstat to different methods of calculation.
