Police arrest man suspected of murdering St. Petersburg LGBTQ rights activist, calling it an apolitical ‘common altercation’

Police and investigators in St. Petersburg have arrested a man suspected of murdering LGBTQ rights activist Yelena Grigoryeva, whose body was discovered on July 22. Officials have not released the man’s name, but they’ve revealed that he’s a Kyrgyz national born in 1981.

According to investigators, the suspect killed Grigoryeva in a common altercation without political motive. The authorities say she was acquainted with the suspect. Officials also state that Grigoryeva “led an asocial lifestyle, consuming alcoholic beverages on repeated occasions, including in the company of the suspect.”
