Open Monitoring Commission member Eva Merkacheva told RIA Novosti that Russian prosecutors and the internal security division of Russia’s Internal Affairs Ministry have begun investigating the case against Meduza correspondent Ivan Golunov. No official announcement has yet been made regarding the reported investigations.

Ivan Golunov has been charged with attempting to distribute drugs in large quantities. He argues that police planted drugs in his backpack and his apartment. Investigators requested that Golunov be jailed for two months to await trial; a court responded Saturday by placing him under house arrest. Earlier today, Russian journalists began submitting large numbers of requests for law enforcement officials to investigate these and other aspects of the case.
