Source: TASS

Elena Shushmareva, Tatarstan’s deputy health minister, was reportedly found dead on Wednesday at her home, where she was under house arrest on fraud charges. A source told the news agency TASS that the information about Shushmareva’s apparent death is still being confirmed.

According to investigators in Kazan, the deputy health minister demanded that financial staff at local medical institutions pay to undergo accreditation by the nonprofit group “Progress,” which at the time was being managed by a friend. Shushmareva allegedly refused to sign documents allocating public funding to the institutions that refused to enroll. As a result, she was charged with theft by fraud and abuse of office.
