Russia is reeling from another assault on its patriotic spirit. Police in the town of Abinsk, in the Krasnodar region, are investigating two girls for dancing around and spitting into the local eternal flame, dedicated to the USSR’s victory in World War II. Footage recorded by a surveillance camera appeared online on January 29.
Administrators at the girls’ school have already met with their parents to discuss the incident, and the girls have been issued formal demerits.
In early 2017, police outside Moscow opened a criminal investigation against a local teenager who danced around a WWII eternal flame. The boy was charged with “hooliganism motivated by hatred toward veterans,” but the case has yet to go anywhere.
