Police in Moscow detain Alexey Navalny 35 minutes before start of major protest

Thirty-five minutes before the start of a major protest on Tverskaya Street in Moscow, police detained Alexey Navalny, the opposition politician who spearheaded the demonstration along with hundreds more rallies across the country on June 12.

Navalny’s wife announced her husband’s detention by police in a tweet:

Hi. This is Yulia Navalnaya. Happy Russia Day, everyone! They’ve detained Alexey at the entrance of our apartment building. He’s asked me to tell you that today’s plans haven’t changed. [Go to] Tversakaya.

Yulia also posted a photograph of Navalny taking his seat in the back of a patrol car:

Happy Russia Day!
