Russia's Supreme Court sentences two Ukrainians for participating in Chechen War

Russia's Supreme Court has confirmed the sentencing of Ukrainians Nicolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh to long terms of imprisonment for their involvement in fighting against against the Russian federal forces in Chechnya in the 1990s.

Karpyuk and Klykh insist on their innocence. In his closing statement, Karpyuk said: "This is lawlessness; it is aimed only at one thing: seeking revenge because I am Ukrainian and a patriot of my country, this is understandable."

Karpyuk and Klykha said that their clients had been tortured during the investigation.

Nadezhda Savchenko, a member of Ukraine's parliament the Verkhovna Rada, was present at the hearing, as she had come to offer her compatriots support.
