Before dawn on September 17, 2016, a group of unidentified men in Balaclavas ran towards the Russian Embassy in Kiev shouting “Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the Heroes” in protest of Russia’s intention to include Crimea in its upcoming Duma elections and use its Embassy in Kiev as a polling station.
The men launched fireworks at the embassy building and chanted “Freedom to Prisoners of the Kremlin” and “There will be no elections” in Ukrainian. Footage of the event also shows them unfolding a banner with a note that Russia is not welcome in Ukraine.
The incident resulted in no injuries. The embassy claims that the attack involved a group of 20 people, none of whom were detained.
Russia is holding its Duma election on Sunday, September 18, 2016.
The building of the Russian Embassy in Kiev will serve as a polling station.
Earlier, in response to Russia’s request that Ukraine ensure the safety of Russian citizens voting on election day, Ukraine established that it could make no such guarantee.
