Two oppositionists win seats in Belarus’s parliament

Among the newly-elected members of Belarus’s parliament, the National Assembly, were two politicians from opposition parties - Anna Kanopatskaya of the United Civil Party and Elena Anisim of the Belarussian Language Society - as per the results of elections that took place on September 11.

The country’s previous parliamentary convocation included no opposition members.

Belarus’s lower house of parliament consists of 110 deputies elected by simple majority.

The turnout at the September 11 elections was over 74 percent of the population.
