A former Ukrainian Navy chief wanted by Kiev for treason will be the next commander of Russia's Baltic Fleet
Sergey Eliseev, the former deputy commander of the Ukrainian Navy, whom the country chief prosecutor’s office has accused of treason and desertion, is expected to become the vice admiral of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, according to unofficial reports. Eliseev has held the position of deputy vice admiral in the Russian Navy since July 2014.
Eliseev is the only officer keeping his job following mass dismissals by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who inspected the Baltic Fleet earlier this week. According to the website Fontanka.ru, more than 50 admirals and captains have lost their jobs.
Earlier today, June 30, the Defense Ministry confirmed several resignations, including the exit of current Vice Admiral Viktor Kravchuk and chief of staff Sergei Popov, who are both accused of “serious shortcomings in the organization of training … for failing to take all necessary measures to improve prerequisites for the placement of personnel, for lacking concern for subordinates, and for distorting the true state of affairs in reports.”
