Georgy Poltavchenko, the governor of St. Petersburg, has officially renamed one of the city’s bridges in honor of Akhmat Kadyrov, the former leader Chechen and the assassinated father of the republic’s current head, Ramzan Kadyrov.

“St. Petersburg is a part of Russia; it is the country’s second [most important] city. And Russia remembers and honors all of its heroes … [Screening] heros based on the premise of [whether they] have done anything for St. Petersburg goes against the very essence of our city, which, for nearly 300 years, was the capital of the multinational Russian Empire,” the governor’s spokesman said.
