St. Petersburg's municipal government has agreed to grant a permit for a protest against renaming a local bridge after former Chechen President Akhmat Kadyrov. The protest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 6, 2016, at the Fields of Mars park in the city center, according to Maksim Reznik, a deputy in the city’s legislative assembly.

Another rally is scheduled to occur on June 3, at the site of the Municipal Committee for Culture on Nevsky Prospekt.

On May 30, St Petersburg’s Topoynmy Commission proposed renaming the city’s Dudergofsky Bridge after Akhmat Kaydrov. Public outrage ensued and an online petition against the proposal, hosted on the website Change.org, has attracted more than 57,000 signatures by June 2.

A number of well-known figures have spoken out against the renaming, including municipal deputies and cultural figures, such as the filmmaker Alexander Sokurov and the actor Oleg Basilashvili.
