Chechen court blocks article about Islam in satirical online encyclopedia

A court in Grozny has banned an article about Islam on “Lurkmore,” a Russian satirical website modeled after Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Dramatica.

According to David Homak, Lurkmore's founder, the court ruled that the page contains “materials seeking to offend the religious sentiments of Muslims and may incite nationalist, racial, or religious hatred and antagonism.”

Government records show that Lurkmore was added to Russia's official Internet blacklist based on a Grozny court decision on February 29, 2016. According to reports, however, many Russian Internet users are still able to access Lurkmore and its article about Islam.

The online encyclopedia Lurkmore was founded in 2007. Dedicated to the study of subcultures and memes, the encyclopedia often contains entries that are written in a satirical style.
