As expected, Vladimir Putin has appointed Ramzan Kadyrov to serve as acting head of Chechnya, until elections later this year in September, when Kadyrov will likely be reelected.

On April 5, Kadyrov's term in office formally expires. On several occasions, he has indicated his readiness to leave his post, if Putin wishes to appoint a successor. On February 27, he told a national TV network that he feels the time has come to find his replacement.

Kadyrov has formally led the Chechen Republic since February 2007. His father, former Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov, was assassinated in May 2004.
