Chechen officials claim another million-man rally

Chechen Interior Ministry officials say more than a million people in Grozny have attended a rally in honor of the Chechen Constitution, which was adopted 13 years ago today. Writing on Instagram, Chechnya's leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, said greetings from President Vladimir Putin were also read aloud to the crowd.

According to federal statistics, Chechnya's total population is just under 1.4 million people.

This isn't the first time Chechen officials have claimed such a large crowd at a public event. At a protest in January 2015 against caricatures defaming the Prophet Muhammed, Chechnya's Interior Ministry also said more than a million people turned out, reasoning that the demonstration attracted people from neighboring republics.
