Facebook and Twitter are now Russia's two most popular original sources in news stories, says Yandex

Facebook and Twitter are the two most popular sources in news stories in Russia, according to a new aggregation feature offered by the website Yandex, called “How It All Began.” According to Yandex, sources tracing back to Facebook appeared in 8 percent of all newsbreaks in December 2015, and Twitter sources appeared in 5 percent of these stories.

Beginning this year, Yandex starting tracking original sources in stories reported in the Russian news media, different government agencies, and on social media. While Facebook and Twitter sources appeared in 13 percent of newsbreaks, Russia's traditional media was still the source in 40 percent of stories. The newspaper Kommersant (2.9 percent) and the news agency Interfax (2.8 percent) led this group.
