The Russian government has confiscated nearly 1,000 metric tons of boycotted Western food
Between August 6 and November 7, Russian officials confiscated roughly 974.8 metric tons (2.2 million pounds) of boycotted Western food that was illegally imported to Russia, according to the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance.
The majority of the contraband—almost 700 metric tons—was converted into fertilizer for crops. Another 88.3 metric tons was used to feed livestock, meaning that the remaining food (weighing about 187 metric tons, or 412,000 pounds) was presumably destroyed in the government's campaign to burn, bulldoze, and bury boycotted Western goods.
An embargo banning food imports from the EU, Norway, the US, Australia, and Canada is in place in Russia. In late July 2015, Vladimir Putin ordered the destruction of any banned products found on Russian territory. Since August 6, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance has been bulldozing and burning such illegal imports.
