Nadezhda Savchenko will be tried in Russia without a jury

Nadezhda Savchenko has been denied all appeals, including the defense’s appeal for a jury trial, according to her lawyer Nikolai Polozov. Savchenko is the Ukrainian soldier now on trial in Russia for allegedly aiding and abetting the murder of Russian journalists and illegally crossing the border into Russia.

“I called the Investigative Committee. All appeals of Nadezhda Savchenko’s defense have been rejected, the case has been handed over to the Prosecutor General’s Office. The rejections will be mailed. #FreeSavchenko”

In addition to asking for a jury trial, the defense had asked to hand the case over to a Moscow court. Lawyer Mark Feigin told news agency Interfax that the court hearings can take place either in the Russian city of Rostov or in Moscow. The documents state that she crossed the border into Russia in Rostov region. Earlier, it was reported that investigators believe she crossed the border in Voronezh region.

According to the investigators, Savchenko was detained after she illegally crossed the border into Russia. Savchenko, however, maintains that she was captured in the east of Ukraine and brought into Russia.
