Russian figure skater wins over Japan with performance dressed as Sailor Moon
Earlier this month, the 16-year-old Russian figure skater and European champion Yevgeniya Medvedeva performed at the 2016 “Dreams on Ice” show in Japan dressed as the anime character Sailor Moon. After the performance, she also met with Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon.
Footage of Medvedeva’s performance has reportedly gained viral popularity in Japan, and Japanese Instagram users have flooded her account with supportive comments.
This is not the first time Medvedeva has enjoyed popularity in Japan. After winning a gold medal at a championship in Boston this past spring, the figure skater was asked by journalists to recite a poem in Japanese. The poem she selected was an excerpt from Sailor Moon.
Medvedeva’s interest in Japanese culture is also no secret, as the athlete regularly posts photos of drawings sent to her by Japanese fans.
