The Russian animation studio Soyuzmultfilm has released an absurdist new cartoon by Leonid Shmelkov called “The Very Lonely Rooster.” (By some linguistic misfortune, the studio translated the title as “The Very Lonely Cock.”) The short film begins with a rooster laying eggs for a farmer, and things get much stranger from there.

The true absurdism starts when the rooster stops laying eggs and decides to pull on a rope the farmer has been using to move boxes for the eggs. When this happens, a series of bizarre transformations takes place: the farmer’s head disappears, the rooster’s lower half runs off, and there’s much more.

“The Very Lonely Rooster” is a feature about a charmingly stupid, very timid, and of course very lonely rooster and his encounter with a rope.
