Dozens gather outside a private house near Kyiv saying soldiers are being held and beaten there. National Guard says the building was used to house newly mobilized troops.
Several dozen people gathered outside a house in the village of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka in Ukraine’s Kyiv region on the evening of November 2, saying people were being held inside and that their captors “are torturing” them. Hromadske, Interfax-Ukraine, and other Ukrainian news outlets reported the incident.
Residents said several men who may have left their military units without permission were being held in the private home, along with service members from a Ukrainian National Guard unit. Residents tried to storm the property and force open the gates. One woman outside the house told journalists that her son was inside after officers from a Territorial Recruitment Center, Ukraine’s equivalent of a military enlistment office, detained him on his way to work.
Doctors, senior Kyiv regional police officials, and National Guard commanders soon arrived at the scene. A correspondent for the news agency UNIAN reported that four people were brought out of the house. One reportedly had a broken spine.
National Guard commander Oleksandr Pivnenko said the people in the house were National Guard service members who had been returned to their units after leaving without permission. He denied allegations that service members had been tortured.
“We’ve sent four service members who need medical care to the hospital. These are service members who were caught and returned to their units after going absent without leave. To be clear, the other service members [in the house] are members of the National Guard,” he said.
Pivnenko later said the private home was being used as temporary housing for National Guard service members. Newly mobilized personnel arrived there, completed paperwork, and underwent checks before being sent to a training center. He said 18 service members were in the building.
Journalists also reported that people gathered outside the house had begun throwing eggs at police.
