Russia’s Defense Ministry proposes delaying December military pay until January
Russia’s Defense Ministry has drafted an order that would postpone service members’ December pay to January for the first time in at least 18 years, the independent Russian news outlet Verstka reported.
Under current rules, service members are paid for the previous month between the 10th and 20th of each month, and for December, by December 25. The Defense Ministry wants to push the December payments back to January 11–21 of the following year.
If adopted, the changes could take effect as early as this year.
Service members of the Joint Group of Forces fighting in Ukraine would be exempt, continuing to be paid under the old schedule before the New Year. Contract soldiers would also be treated differently: in December, they are supposed to receive a bonus along with their pay.
Russian service members have received their December pay before the end of the calendar year since at least 2008, according to official records Verstka reviewed. The outlet said the practice was likely also observed during the Soviet era.
Authorities in Stavropol Krai decided to postpone until 2027 the payments to the families of those killed and wounded in the war, it was reported the day before. The payments are normally supposed to arrive within five business days of a claim’s approval, but authorities can delay payment if the regional Labor Ministry’s account lacks funds.
Regions have also been cutting payments to the families of the deceased one after another in recent months. In the Ulyanovsk region, the payments were cut by a factor of 20, while in the Saratov region, they were cut by a factor of 10.
