Moscow mayor says more than 800 Ukrainian drones headed toward Russian capital as reports emerge of fire at Samara region oil refinery
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 862 Ukrainian drones flew toward the Moscow region starting on the evening of October 29, with most shot down at “distant approaches.”
Sobyanin said 170 of the drones were shot down as they approached Moscow but did not disclose the aftermath of the attack.
Ukrainian monitoring channels and Astra, an independent Telegram channel, reported that drones struck the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in the Samara region. Regional authorities did not confirm the attack.
Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said on the morning of October 30 that Ukrainian forces are attacking the region, but gave no further details.
The Novokuibyshevsk refinery, a Rosneft subsidiary, has repeatedly come under attack from Ukrainian drones, forcing it to halt operations. The plant produces several dozen types of petroleum products and has an annual capacity of about 8.8 million tons of oil (about 9.7 million short tons).
Sobyanin had reported a day earlier that 613 drones flew toward the Moscow region from the evening of October 28 to the morning of October 29, and that 231 of them were shot down as they approached the Russian capital.
