G20 foreign ministers’ group photo canceled after several refuse to pose with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
Organizers of the G20 foreign ministers’ summit in Atlanta canceled the traditional group photo after several ministers refused to pose with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Bloomberg reported.
Although the photo is purely ceremonial, it is “a ritual of such meetings and meant to display unity among global leaders,” Bloomberg said.
An unnamed official said organizers decided to skip the photo to avert a diplomatic incident and keep the focus on the summit’s planned agenda.
At a G20 finance ministers’ summit in early September, several participants similarly refused to pose with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov. The photos were eventually taken without him.
The foreign ministers’ summit is taking place in Atlanta from October 30 to 31, ahead of the G20 leaders’ summit in Miami in mid-December. Vladimir Putin has been invited, but the Kremlin has yet to confirm his attendance.
