Court of Arbitration for Sport orders International Ice Hockey Federation to admit Russian hockey teams to five championships

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to admit Russian national hockey teams to five international championships in the 2026/2027 season, the court said in a press release.

CAS granted one of the appeals filed by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. The ruling applies to tournaments in 2027: the men’s and women’s world hockey championships, the under-18 boys’ and girls’ championships, and the world junior championship.

The IIHF said in a statement that it was disappointed by the CAS ruling, which allows the Russian Ice Hockey Federation to immediately register its team for all the championships.

The IIHF disagrees with this aspect of the ruling and maintains that its decisions were necessary to protect the safety and security of all participants and safeguard the integrity of its competitions.

The federation also said it would urgently assess what steps were needed to comply with the ruling, how long that would take, and what organizational implications would follow.

The next major tournament under IIHF auspices is the world junior championship, which will begin in Canada on December 26. The list of participants has already been finalized, and Russia is not among them.

Russian and Belarusian athletes have been barred from international team sports competitions since 2022. Restrictions on Russian athletes only began to ease gradually in 2026.
