Ukrainian investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach detained in Vienna while searching for former prosecutor general who fled Ukraine
Ukrainska Pravda reported on the evening of October 8 that Mykhailo Tkach, head of the outlet’s investigative journalism department, had been detained in Vienna while on assignment for the paper. The reason for his detention is unknown.
The outlet said the assignment involved tracking down Ruslan Kravchenko, Ukraine’s former prosecutor general, who left the country after anti-corruption agencies searched his premises in early September.
Ukraine’s embassy in Austria has asked Austrian authorities for information about Tkach’s detention, said Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.
A Ukrainian consul met with Tkach and was able to speak with him, but the journalist remains in custody.
Kravchenko resigned on September 8 after anti-corruption agencies searched the office of Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
He soon published a video statement saying he had filed a notice of suspicion against Semen Kryvonos, director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). Kravchenko accused Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies of illegally seizing criminal case files on their own employees during the searches.
