Liubov Rozhanska, a Ukrainian citizen detained in Kazakhstan at Russia’s request, has been released, her lawyer, Alexei Pryanishnikov, told Vot Tak.

“The detention period had expired. Since no pretrial restriction had been assigned, she was released from the detention facility,” he said.

He said Rozhanska was released as early as October 4. She then spent several days on the grounds of the Ukrainian embassy before leaving Kazakhstan for Odesa.

Rozhanska had flown to Kazakhstan from Istanbul in early October to pick up her grandson, who was to be brought from Russia. The boy’s mother had taken him from Ukraine to Russia in 2021.

According to Pryanishnikov, the boy’s father had allowed only a temporary trip, but the boy and his mother never returned to Ukraine and instead obtained Russian citizenship. Ukrainian courts, including Ukraine’s Supreme Court, ruled that the boy should live with his father.

Relatives of the boy’s mother contacted Rozhanska and offered to hand the boy over to her in Kazakhstan. At the same time, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) directorate in the Kaliningrad region, where the mother and boy live, had petitioned a court for an arrest warrant against Rozhanska on charges of attempted kidnapping. When Rozhanska flew to Astana from Istanbul, she was detained at the airport at Russia’s request.

Rozhanska’s lawyer insists that his client was carrying out the ruling of Ukrainian courts that determined the boy should live with his father.
