Russia opens criminal fraud case against former co-owner of retail chains Lenta and Rive Gauche
Dmitry Kostygin, the former co-owner of the Russian supermarket chain Lenta and the Rive Gauche chain, has been detained, the Russian business news outlet RBC and the St. Petersburg-based news outlet Fontanka reported, citing sources. On October 8, a Moscow court placed Kostygin under house arrest.
According to Fontanka, Kostygin is accused of concealing Yulmart’s true financial position when he and accomplices signed a 2017 contract on Yulmart’s behalf with a company called Berks to supply equipment and machinery.
Kostygin, a former co-owner of the retailer Yulmart, was named a suspect in a criminal fraud case in 2017. August Meyer, another co-owner of the chain, was also charged in the case.
The businessmen were accused of misappropriating loans Yulmart had received from Sberbank and VTB for business development, with total damage estimated at 3.14 billion rubles. In 2024, a court sentenced Kostygin to four years in prison and Meyer to three years. Both were exempted from serving their sentences after the statute of limitations expired.
