Car bomb in Russia kills ex-prison official Ukraine accused of torturing POWs
A bomb destroyed a car belonging to a participant in Russia’s war against Ukraine on October 2 in Novomoskovsk, in Russia’s Tula region, the Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+ reported.
The bomb had been planted under the car’s chassis, according to data from the anonymous Russian Telegram channel VChK-OGPU. The driver killed was identified as Roman Syromyatnikov, and the Novomoskovsk-based news outlet Novomoskovsk Segodnya confirmed the death of a person by that name.
Syromyatnikov worked at Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) facilities in the Tula region during the 2010s. He signed a contract with Russia’s Defense Ministry in 2023 and returned to the Tula region for medical treatment in late 2024, the independent Russian investigative outlet iStories reported, citing leaked data.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office accused Syromyatnikov of torturing and beating Ukrainian prisoners of war held at Penal Colony No. 1 in the Tula region in 2022.
Syromyatnikov had said that before leaving for the war, he had worked as a basic life-safety instructor at a college in Novomoskovsk since at least 2021. iStories was unable to independently confirm that he worked within the FSIN system in 2022.
