Russia will reportedly stop funding films that depict serial killers or law enforcement officials taking bribes

Films and television series depicting officials from Russia’s Interior Ministry, Federal Security Service (FSB), Investigative Committee, or prosecutors’ offices taking bribes or taking part in criminal schemes will no longer receive state funding, two sources at major film studios told Kommersant.

The sources said the restrictions will also apply to projects about violent predators and serial killers.

The restrictions will not be written into law for now, but one Kommersant source said “all producers know about them” and that those who violate them will not receive state funding for their next project. He said the restrictions mainly apply to feature films, with “more leeway” for series on streaming platforms.

The sources said Culture Ministry officials and the Internet Development Institute had told the Association of Film and Television Producers (APKiT) about the restrictions. The association’s members include 46 of Russia’s largest film companies. A source at APKiT said it had received no official information about the restrictions.
