Russian state companies more than triple spending on landline phones amid internet restrictions

State-owned companies spent 118 million rubles on landline phones from January through August 2026, more than triple the amount spent in the same period a year earlier, Vedomosti reported, citing data from government procurement tracking services.

The number of purchases for landline phones also rose 12.5% year over year, to 3,595.

Telecommunications Equipment, an autonomous nonprofit organization, told the newspaper that internet restrictions imposed in various parts of Russia had a major impact on demand.

Rostelecom President Mikhail Oseyevsky said in March that Russians were requesting landline installations much more often. He said at the time that “many very prominent people” wanted a reliable home landline.

Oseyevsky made the remarks after mobile service and internet access had been unavailable in several Moscow districts. Reports at the time linked the restrictions to tests of “whitelists.”
