A Starlink satellite communications ground station caught fire on the evening of September 23 in the village of Wola Krobowska, in Poland’s Masovian Voivodeship, less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Warsaw.

The fire destroyed the distribution panel that connects to the station’s antennas.

Polish security services believe the fire was the result of arson, RMF24 reported. Sources said a bottle of flammable liquid resembling a “Molotov cocktail” was found near the distribution panel.

Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said that “wherever suspicious fires occur, we must by default assume that we are dealing with possible sabotage or subversion.” He said Russia “is using fairly simple methods — they carry out arson attacks and acts of sabotage, provoking social instability across Europe.”

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said the state fire service, police, and prosecutor’s office would investigate. “It’s hard to imagine that everything happens by chance in cases like this,” he said, adding that “Russia has reached a new level of hybrid warfare against all of Europe.”

In the view of Digitization Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski, much of the evidence suggests the fire was a deliberate attempt to disrupt the station’s operation, which supports internet access in Ukraine. He said “sabotage cannot be ruled out,” adding that the pattern is consistent with Russian security services planning acts of sabotage in Poland.
