U.S. invites Vladimir Putin to December’s G20 summit in Miami

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to the G20 summit, scheduled for December 14–15 in Miami, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in response to reporters’ questions.

“Maybe it can serve as the baseline or a platform for a broader agreement,” Rubio said.

Rubio defended the invitation, saying the Trump administration hopes Putin accepts, arguing that it’s necessary in international relations for people in disagreement to meet and talk.

Asked whether Moscow is interested in an energy-sector ceasefire, Rubio said: “It doesn’t solve the war, but it does, I think, in some ways potentially alleviate some of the global pressures that are being felt.”
